10 things to know before your trip to Hawaii

10 things to know before your trip to Hawaii

Here are some practical and cultural tips to know before you take off.

So you’re ready to head to Hawaii! Here are 10 things you should know to enjoy your Hawaiian vacation to the fullest.

1) Lei etiquette

When you arrive and/or leave, you may be given a lei. This is a gesture of aloha (love, affection, esteem); thus, you should always graciously accept it and the hug or kiss on the cheek that comes with it. Closed (tied) lei should rest on the shoulders, half draped in the front and half down the back. Open (untied) lei are worn around the neck, with each side hanging evenly down the front. Pregnant women should wear only open lei; closed lei are considered bad luck because they symbolize the umbilical cord around the baby’s neck.

Above: Lei is a gesture of aloha and should be graciously accepted.

2) Hawaiian or Local?

People from around the world started immigrating to Hawaii in the mid-1800s to work on sugar plantations. After fulfilling their contracts, the majority of them stayed, creating Hawaii’s wonderful melting pot. There’s a distinction between “Hawaiians” and “locals.” Hawaiians claim native ancestry; locals are Hawaii residents who may not have Hawaiian blood. Kama`aina refers to longtime Hawaii residents; malihini means newcomers.

3) Leave your slippers at the door

You’ll notice that people remove their footwear before entering a house, a practice traced to Japanese immigrants. Homes in Japan are typically built a few feet above the cold, damp earth. People remove their shoes at the ground level and step up into the house in their socks, so dirt and germs are not brought inside. Removing footwear also indicates they are entering the house with “clean” thoughts and spirits.

4) The Japanese tradition of omiyage

When visiting someone’s home, it is customary to bring omiyage (gifts) for the host. Food specialties from the area you’re from would be most appreciated (e.g., candy or wine). Avoid anything in increments of four because that’s considered an unlucky number (in Japanese, the word for death and four are both pronounced shi).

Above: Food items are popular omiyage (gifts) in the Japanese tradition and Lion Coffee is a favorite of visitors to take back home.

5) Bring your own bag

Be aware that Hawaii has banned plastic bags because of environmental concerns. Plastic is one of the major contributors to the huge garbage patches floating in the ocean, and many marine animals become entangled in it or eat it (a deadly mistake because it blocks their digestive tract). Carry your own bags when you shop or you’ll be charged 15 cents for each reusable one that the store provides for your purchases. Also, prices for just about everything are higher than the Mainland U.S. because goods have to be shipped here.

6) Keep your distance from marine life

Federal law requires all ocean users to stay at least 100 yards from the humpback whale, Hawaii’s state marine mammal. While there is no such law for other sea life (including dolphins and the endangered green sea turtle and monk seal, Hawaii’s state mammal), 150 feet is the recommended viewing distance. Please do not step on or remove pieces from reefs as they are built by coral, another marine animal.

Above: Federal law requires you to keep your distance from marine mammals and other sea life.

7) Driving and traffic

Hawaii’s laid-back vibe goes for driving, too. Kamaaina seldom use their horn, and if another driver extends a courtesy to them, they’ll wave to say thank you. Carefully plan your day trips because traffic, especially on Oahu, can be bumper-to-bumper bad. Avoid the highways during morning and afternoon rush hour, which are roughly 6 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 6 p.m. on weekdays. Traffic is lighter on weekends, holidays and when school is not in session.

8) Ocean safety

The Pacific is warm and inviting, but it can also be capricious. Swim at beaches staffed by lifeguards. Always go into the water with a buddy, and be alert; locals say, “Never turn your back to the ocean,” and that’s great advice. Look for beach hazard rating signs, and heed warnings and closures. CheckHawaiiBeachSafety.comOpens external link to page that may not meet accessibility guidelines for current ocean conditions. Stings from box jellyfish can cause swelling, itching, welts, rash and burning pain (worse in severe cases). Jellyfish usually appear off south-facing beaches 8 to 10 days after a full moon.

Above: Heed warnings and never turn your back to the sea.

9) Giving and receiving directions

North, south, east and west aren’t used for directions. Instead, locals say mauka (toward the mountains), makai (toward the ocean), ewa (west) and Diamond Head (east). You’ll also hear “windward” and “leeward.” Hawaii’s trade winds normally blow from the northeast to southwest. Windward is the direction from which the wind is blowing (the wetter north and east sides of the islands). Leeward is the direction toward which the wind is blowing (the drier south and west sides).

10) Hawaiian language

Learn common Hawaiian words by downloading the Hawaiian Words–Translation and Dictionary app on your iPad, iPod Touch or iPhone: iTunes.Apple.com. A few of those words have already been shared; here are several more a hui hou: until we meet again aina: land akamai: smart alii: royalty e komo mai: welcome hana hou: encore; one more time haole: foreigner; commonly refers to Caucasians heiau: ancient place of worship kalua: to bake in the underground oven kane: man kapu: taboo, forbidden keiki: child, children kokua: help lanai: patio luau: feast mahalo: thank you moana: ocean ohana: family ono: delicious pau: finished poi: pounded taro that has been thinned with water puka: hole pupu: appetizer wahine: woman wiki: fast.

Seabourn Unveils Custom Subs To Take Travelers “Below The Surface” On New Expedition Ships

Seabourn Unveils Custom Subs To Take Travelers “Below The Surface” On New Expedition Ships

Seabourn, the world’s finest ultra-luxury cruise line, is preparing to take travelers into the depths of the ocean for the first time by revealing the design and details for its custom submarines that will operate excursions for an additional charge from the line’s two upcoming ultra-luxury purpose-built expedition ships. Both Seabourn Venture and her yet-to-be-named sister ship will sail to the far corners of the Earth carrying two U-Boat Worx Cruise Sub 7 subs designed specifically for Seabourn.

Each battery-powered sub will carry six guests as well as one pilot, who will guide the journey up to 300 meters beneath the surface to explore sunken wrecks, reefs, and view marine wildlife in their natural habitat. Guests are seated in two clear acrylic spheres flanking the center pilot’s station, with an awe-inspiring perspective of the marine world just outside thanks to undisturbed and undistorted views in virtually all directions. The three passenger seats in each sphere are mounted on a rotating platform that can turn for best sightlines.

“The undersea world is often considered as the last great frontier on Earth, with more than 80 percent of the underwater realm remaining unmapped, unobserved, and unexplored according to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration,” said Robin West, vice president of Expedition Operations for Seabourn. “With these subs, we’re going to take our guests to places that few have ever seen firsthand, leaving them with a perspective on the world around us that is jaw-dropping and will create stories to last a lifetime.”

To maximize the guest experience, the subs will be outfitted with a host of optional equipment to enhance this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. A 4k underwater video camera system will record the world outside while an internal video recording system will capture imagery of guests inside and their direct surroundings. Video footage can then be downloaded and projected on large screens in the Discovery Center during lectures aboard the ships. A six-function manipulator arm capable of lifting up to 32 kg (about 70 pounds) will also be mounted on the side of the sub. In keeping with the luxury experience found on Seabourn, each sub on both ships will be outfitted with custom embroidered leather upholstery, two air conditioning systems, a Bluetooth stereo system, and champagne chiller for guests looking to toast their voyage of discovery.

The subs will be operated multiple times per day in regions around the world where conditions are suitable. They will be equipped with underwater LED flood/spot lights, imaging sonar that acts as a second set of eyes, and an advanced underwater tracking and navigation system.

Seabourn Venture is scheduled to launch in June 2021, with a second yet-to-be-named sister ship slated to launch in May 2022. The ships are being designed from conception for expedition travel blended with ultra-luxury and personalized service by leading travel experts and seasoned professionals with great depth of experience in expedition, hospitality, and luxury cruising.

Between July 2021 and April 2022, Seabourn Venture will visit a vast number of breathtaking locations and remote destinations in the Arctic and Antarctica, as well as in the Amazon, Caribbean, Central and South America and more, offering guests the unique opportunity to experience ultra-luxury expedition cruising and exhilarating adventures. The ship is scheduled to visit more than 150 unique and fascinating destinations across the globe – many of which few travelers have ever been – and over 65 new or notable destinations with a multitude of new and compelling expedition experiences. The itineraries, fares and additional details of Seabourn Venture's inaugural year are available at www.seabourn.com.

Both ships will be designed and built for diverse environments to PC6 Polar Class standards and will include a plethora of modern hardware and technology that will extend the ships global deployment and capabilities. The ships will also be designed to carry a number of kayaks and 24 Zodiacs that can accommodate all onboard guests at once, which will allow for a truly immersive experience. Each ship will feature 132 luxurious oceanfront veranda suites. More details and full-color renderings of the ship and its interior spaces will be released in the months ahead.

Seabourn continues to represent the pinnacle of ultra-luxury travel with intimate ships offering key elements that set the line apart: spacious, thoughtfully appointed suites, many with verandas and all 100% ocean front; superb dining in a choice of venues; complimentary premium spirits and fine wines available on board at all times; award-winning service and a relaxed, sociable atmosphere that makes guests feel right at home on board. The ships travel the globe to many of the world’s most desirable destinations, including marquee cities, more than 170 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and lesser-known ports and hideaways.

Aeroflot receives five-star punctuality rating from OAG

Aeroflot receives five-star punctuality rating from OAG

Aeroflot has been granted the highest five-star rating for punctuality from the world's leading provider of travel data and insight OAG, becoming the only Russian and the largest European airline by passenger traffic to receive five stars.

OAG’s punctuality rating is based on full-year on-time performance data. Only 10% of On-Time Performance Star Ratings receive the highest five-star rating. According to new data provided by OAG, this year Aeroflot performed better than its global peers, thus confirming its stable position among world’s most punctual airlines.

In January 2019, UK aviation publication FlightGlobal named Aeroflot the world’s fifth most punctual airline and second in Europe based on data from 2018.

"Aeroflot is continuously strengthening the quality of service," said Vitaly Saveliev, CEO of Aeroflot. "We make every effort to ensure our passengers’ trips are as comfortable and punctual as possible. Our priority is to provide the most comprehensive consideration of customers’ needs along with attention to detail at every stage of their journeys."

In 2018, Aeroflot took a number of measures that helped significantly improve punctuality. These included strict implementation of boarding regulations and hand-luggage requirements. Future plans include innovations based on the latest digital technologies, such as biometric controls, that will significantly accelerate pre-flight airport procedures for passengers.
