Lucky Air (8L), a low cost carrier based in Kunming and member of the Hainan group, launched its first flight on February 26, 2006. The airline is one of the four founding members of the U-FLY Alliance.

From Kunming and Dali, Lucky Air flies to 61 domestic, 12 international and 1 regional destinations. Effective June 2017, the airline will add three more international routes to its network covering Moscow (DME), Manila (MNL) and Cebu (CEB).

On 23rd January 2017, Lucky Air added Kuala Lumpur to its international network with four weekly flights from Kunming, using B737-800 aircraft with a total of 180 seats allocated on this route. Halal-certified meals are available for purchase on board. The airline is currently operating a schedule chartered flight from Penang to Kunming. Lucky Air is also planning to expand its network to Kota Kinabalu in July 2017.

Lucky Air operates a fleet of 42 aircraft and is now the second largest airline in Kunming as per market share. The new delivery of Airbus A330 that can accommodate 292 passengers was put into operation on 21 March 2017. It will operate a direct air route connecting Kunming and Moscow this summer, according to Lucky Air.

Lucky Air has a proven track record of safe operations during the past ten years. The airline believes "Easy Life, Happy Flight", aiming at making the flight more enjoyable for more people.
