Fun Family Activity in Hawaii

Fun Family Activity in Hawaii

For the young and young at heart.

Wet 'n' Wild Hawaii
Put on your swimsuit and get set for some wild, wet, watery fun. Swirl in a 45-foot-high water funnel. Body surf or grab a tube to ride two-foot swells in a 400,000-gallon wave pool. Speed down a slide that catapults you into the air before you free fall into a 12-foot-deep pool. Experience the thrill of white-water rafting around sharp turns and over steep drops. Get wet, get wild! The name of this 29-acre water playground says it all. Wet ’n’ Wild Hawaii offers rides and attractions that pump up your heart rate and make you scream with delight.

Maui Ocean Center
State-of-the-art marine park with interactive displays attracts thousands of visitors a year. With outdoor touch pools, interactive displays and a 750,000-gallon Open Ocean Exhibit with more than 2,000 fishes, it’s no wonder Maui Ocean Center in Wailuku is one of the island’s most popular attractions. About 400,000 people visit this $20 million state-of-the-art marine park every year, learning about the endangered Hawaiian green sea turtles or browsing the largest collection of live coral in the U.S.

Kualoa Ranch
A 4,000 acre working ranch offers a wide-range of activities and adventure. Fun guided eco-tours go to many locations seen in the 50-plus movies and TV shows that have been filmed at Kualoa since the 1950s, including Jurassic Park. Reserve a full day for a visit; there’s that much to do. For example, go horseback riding, drive an ATV, cruise around an 800-year-old fishpond in a catamaran. Paddle a canoe; rumble through a rainforest in a four-wheel-drive vehicle; stroll through gardens of fruit trees and fragrant flowers.

Panaewa Rainforest Zoo and Gardens
Spy the state bird, the nene (pronounced neh-neh), plus ibis, macaws, parrots, pueo (owl), amakihi honeycreepers, whistling tree ducks and more. The reigning reptiles are the Asian Forest Tortoises, which weigh 50-85 pounds and have large carapaces of 16-24 inches. The free zoo also has a variety of turtles, geckos and iguanas, red tegu lizards, skinks, frogs and a butterfly house. Botanical wonders include the Giant Victoria Waterlily, which seasonally blooms 18-inch blossoms during the summer.

Mountain Tubing
The sugar plantations play an important part in Hawaii’s history, and this unique inner tube tour takes you through the historic irrigation system of the former Lihue Plantation. This water system runs through some of the most beautiful and remote parts of Kauai and provides views of the ocean, coastline, mountains and valleys. The water flow originates near the top of Mount Waialeale, the wettest spot in the world, and is channeled through ditches and tunnels manually created by plantation workers more than a century ago.

Rail Europe – 5 Most Charming Villages In Switzerland

Rail Europe – 5 Most Charming Villages In Switzerland

The Grand Tour of Switzerland passes by a multitude of hidden gems – such as many places listed in the Federal Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites (ISOS). We’ve picked a selection of 5 villages to whet your appetite. You can learn more about these fascinating places here.

Ermatingen
The former fishing, farming and winegrowing village of Ermatingen is located on the delta of a stream directly on Lower Lake Constance, between Kreuzlingen and Steckborn, and is the first village in the Canton of Thurgau mentioned in a deed that still exists to this day.

Bauen
The small, historic village centre is comprised of residential houses and inns, most of which are built in the traditional Central Swiss farmhouse style with their gables facing the sea. These buildings surround a small square, which contains a monument dedicated to Alberik Zwyssig, who was born in Bauen and composed the Swiss national anthem, “Trittst im Morgenrot daher”.

Soazza
The pretty laneways in the village have all the elegance of a city in places, while elsewhere, they are filled with rustic, rural mountain charm. The high street, or Hauptgasse, is lined with tall, sometimes elegant townhouses dating back to the 19th century. Here, you will find small, stone-clad cottages, prominently interspersed with stately buildings of importance, such as the Palazzo à Marca

Trogen
The village is characterized by a blend of urbanity and village charm, and is closely linked with the history of the Zellweger merchant family. Entire village centre is occupied by classicist buildings with the typical windows, set closely together, which give the village its unique urban appearance

Erlenbach
The village features numerous well-preserved single structures from various eras, built in the traditional regional style. In addition to Simmental houses, richly decorated with ornate carvings, these also include the Ründihäuser (with arched, connected tympana and elements of typical Bernese farmhouse architecture) built after a village fire in 1765 in the Grossdorf, the historic inns and the mediaeval church with its rectory and the Pfrundscheune (a barn-like church hall).

Iloilo, the heart of the Philippines

Iloilo, the heart of the Philippines

Iloilo is the name of both a province and its capital city. An established trading hub long before the Spaniards arrived in the 16th century, Iloilo remains one of the busiest seaports in the country. Here the old and new are in harmony, with well-preserved ancestral homes and centuries-old churches standing beside modern buildings. The city also offers a dynamic culinary history and boasts numerous cycling routes to burn those calories when you’re done feasting.

Things To See & Do

Iloilo Museum of Contemporary Art
The first modern art institution in Iloilo province is located in a newly built colonial-style building at the Megaworld Iloilo Business Park. It houses paintings owned by former New York investment banker Edwin Valencia, who started collecting art in the 1980s.

Go cycling
Hop on a two-wheeler and explore the longest protected bicycle path in the country, which runs through Benigno Aquino Avenue in Iloilo City and connects the municipalities of Molo and Jaro. You can also take a more scenic route downtown to see buildings built in the American and Spanish periods, or plan a half-day trip to the municipality of Leon, where avid bikers go to test their limits.

Where To Dine & Drink

Seventy N Coffee + Drinkery
Formerly a hole-in-the-wall bar in a residential area, Seventy N Coffee + Drinkery has traded up and now occupies a prime spot on the lower ground floor of the shiny and brand new Greenfield commercial complex along Diversion Road. A full bar offering delicious modern cocktails awaits thirsty patrons.

Bakery by Louis
The smell of freshly baked bread inside the tiny space could entice anyone to abandon the pretense of a carb-free diet. This modern and glamorous take on the nondescript neighborhood panaderias (bakery) that Ilonggos have grown up with whips up delectables such as crusty French baguettes and Italian panini alongside sandwiches, calzones and round loaves stuffed with stringy mozzarella and topped with crusty, melted cheese.

Aeroflot – Nizhny Novgorod, The Russian Detroit

Aeroflot – Nizhny Novgorod, The Russian Detroit

Nizhny Novgorod is a lovely place for a family vacation for those who enjoy outdoor strolls. You will find the Chkalov Monument, from which you can get to the Nizhne-Volzhskaya Embankment by taking the challenging Chkalov Staircase. Those who manage it are rewarded with a wonderful panorama.

Every city’s embankment has its own features. Nizhne-Volzhskaya’s has a dock from which you can set off on a cruise ship down the river. And from the Verkhnevolzhskaya Embankment, you can view the wide-open space beyond the Volga. Besides, nearly every building here is an architectural monument in its own right.

Like any other self-respecting city, Nizhniy Novgorod couldn’t have done without its own pedestrian promenade. Nizhny’s is Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street with its wonderfully restored historical buildings. You can walk down the street, slipping into museums and cafes and taking selfies with unique monuments dedicated, for example, to a shoeshine, a constable, a postman, a lady in front of a mirror and even a goat.

The More You See, The More You’ll Love About Hawaii

The More You See, The More You’ll Love About Hawaii

Which islands should you visit?

No doubt about it, there is something enticing about each one of the Hawaiian Islands. The big question is… which islands should you visit? There's several Hawaiian Islands and each one has its own distinct personality and charm. For a true Hawaiian experience, you really ought to visit more than one island to get a sense of Hawaii's unique variety.

Oahu Brings the Best of City Life and Country Living

Oahu is the most popular first stop for most visitors, due in part to the higher number of nonstop flights into Honolulu from international and Mainland U.S. cities. It’s home to the majority of Hawaii’s population; thus, expect crowds and rush-hour traffic in urban areas. That said, it truly offers something for everyone.

Maui is Considered Heaven on Earth

From there, you can venture out for strolls through the former whaling port of Lahaina, glorious sunrises or sunsets at the summit of 10,000-foot Haleakala Volcano, concerts and exhibits at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center and sightseeing on the spectacular coastal road to Hana, which, with some 600 hairpin turns and 50-plus one-lane bridges, will surely test your driving skills.

Hawaii Island is for Volcano Lovers

Volcanic activity is confined to a relatively small southeastern sector, far from the west-side Kohala Coast where most visitors stay. Even if Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is closed, there are plenty of other outdoor diversions to keep you occupied, including camping, birding, ziplining, horseback riding, deep-sea fishing, and exploring cultural sites such as Puuhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park

Kauai is Nature at Its Finest

Kauai is known as the “Garden Island,” and rightly so. Green is everywhere framing rivers and waterfalls; casting broad strokes across valleys, cliffs, mountains, meadows, farmland and taro patches; and coloring its many gardens, Na Aina Kai, Smith’s Tropical Paradise, Princeville Botanical Gardens and the National Tropical Botanical Garden’s.

Molokai and Lanai Offer a Laidback Getaway

Instead, great outdoor adventures beckon. Among Molokai’s highlights are Halawa Valley, Kamakou Preserve, Moomomi Preserve, Molokai Forest Reserve and Kalaupapa (now a National Historical Park), where people stricken with Hansen’s disease (leprosy) were once banished beginning in 1866. The only hotel on the island is modest Hotel Molokai.
