How Can You Reduce Your Fuel Consumption?

Home / News & Events / How Can You Reduce Your Fuel Consumption?

To save money as much as for environmental reasons, reducing fuel consumption on a daily basis is an increasingly frequent issue among motorists. But in practice, it is not always easy to know how to take concrete action. Here are a few everyday tips to help you adopt more eco-friendly driving.

Make your driving flow better

Speed is one of the most significant factors in reducing consumption. For example, did you know that you can save 20% of fuel by lowering your cruising speed by 20 km/h (12 mph)? Use the engine brake and anticipate braking for safer and more economical driving.
Maximise gear changes by shifting up when the engine is around 2,000 RPM.
In addition, cruise control can be very useful for those who drive long distances.

Good behaviour while idling

While waiting at a level crossing, when stuck in traffic jams, at a service station or at a particularly long traffic light: by turning off your engine when you stop for more than 30 seconds, you can save up to 15% of precious fuel.
Vehicles equipped with a “Stop-Start” device will automatically do this for you when you are stopped.

Air conditioning with economy in mind

We don’t always think about it, but air conditioning can represent overconsumption of up to 0.8L per 100 km (2 gallons per 60 miles).
Open the windows when driving at a slow pace; this can effectively cool the passenger compartment.
In traffic jams, consider switching to the “recycling” mode so you don’t breathe the exhaust from cars around you, while cooling the air that is already in the passenger compartment.

Monitor your vehicle’s load

The lawnmower or moving box that has been in your boot for months, you see where we’re going with this? Over the medium and long term, your car’s weight and load have a significant impact on fuel consumption: avoid placing unnecessary items in the boot and rear seats on your daily commutes.

Maximise your trips

Intelligently reducing your fuel consumption also requires getting the most out of your trips. Before driving, you should check the traffic conditions.
When traffic jams are expected, plan an alternative route or alter your departure time. You should also consider maximising the number of passengers in the vehicle per trip.
Using all these tips, drive smarter, and make the most of your budget! The planet will thank you!
