The Gallery is temporarily closed for public visitation with effect from 26th February 2017
Macao Gallery Melaka is situated at No.6 Bukit Peringgit with ten minutes from the inner city of Melaka. This building was constructed by the British administration in a typical Siamese style with high ceilings and large verandas during the pre-war era. This bungalow later formed an enclave for the Melaka Civil Service before converting it into a residence for government officials. Today, it is preserved under the Preservation and Conservation of Cultural Heritage Enactment 1988.
The Macao Special Administrative Regions government and the authorities of Melaka signed a MoU in 2009 for the management and usage of the building. Designed and managed by Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), the gallery is envisaged to showcase the heritage and culture of Macao as well as the historical link between Macao and Melaka. It possesses four themes; exhibiting Macao World Heritage, Macao Events and Festivals, Macao Origins and Culture, and the Maritime history of Portuguese and Chinese.
The ground floor holds two exhibition halls: the Macao World Heritage Room and the Macao Events and Festival Room. The Macao World Heritage Room highlights the Historic Centre of Macao which showcases most of the UNESCO sites in Macao.
The Macao Events and Festival Room highlights the events and festivals, as well as the reasons Macao celebrate them. There is also a Grand Prix simulator for a virtual driving experience on one of the most challenging Grand Prix circuits in Macao city.
The first floor houses two thematic exhibition halls: the Macao Origins and Culture Hall and the Macao Maritime Routes Hall. The Macao Origins and Culture Room narrates the fusion process of Western and Oriental (Eastern) cultures when the Portuguese first landed in Macao in the late 17th century (16th century). This is complemented with a display of cartography, traditions and customs, Portuguese folklore costumes, ceramics and handicrafts.
The Macao Maritime Room explores the extensive voyage of Portuguese and Chinese maritime. Enjoy the tales of these exploits and how those old time sailors braved the perils of the seas to bring fortune and fame back to their homeland.
The gallery also features Multifunction Room, Library and Esplanade. The Multifunction Room is akin to a small auditorium to conduct art or cultural activities, educational talks, seminars or conferences, video presentations, and thematic exhibitions. The Library offers space, resources, and multimedia facilities with a quiet and relaxed ambience for earnest readers.
The Esplanade in the ground floor is a perfect retreat away from the city. You may sit, relax and enjoy a green landscape. This is a perfect venue for informal social functions in a tranquil atmosphere. It also serves coffee and tea for a small fee.
