Aeroflot Group introduces hand-luggage-only fares on some routes in response to high demand

Aeroflot Group introduces hand-luggage-only fares on some routes in response to high demand

From 2 April, Aeroflot Group will introduce hand-baggage-only fares on a number of medium-haul routes operated by Rossiya Airlines and Aeroflot where there is an increased demand for this service.

The new hand-baggage-only fares are being introduced in response to popular demand from passengers who travel light.  Previously, passengers travelling only with carry-on luggage were forced to pay for a service they did not use.

All Rossiya and Aeroflot flights will continue to offer economy class fare options including free hold baggage.

The hand-baggage-only fare will be a more budget-friendly economy option. On some routes, economy fares will be reduced by up to 30%.

On Rossiya flights under the commercial management of PJSC Aeroflot, hand-baggage-only fares will be available on medium-haul flights.  On Aeroflot's own flights, hand-baggage-only rates will be available for flights to these German cities:

•   Berlin

•   Frankfurt

•   Dusseldorf

•   Munich

•   Hamburg

•   Stuttgart

•   Hannover

•   Dresden

And these Italian cities:

•   Rome

•   Milan

•   Venice

•   Bologna

•   Naples

•   Verona

"The main purpose of introducing hand-baggage-only fares is to reduce the minimum price for air travel even further and expand the choice available. This is a global trend even among legacy airlines", said Andrei Chikhanchin, Deputy CEO for Commerce and Finance. "Now we can offer the best option for those who want to travel light and on a budget, and for those who want to get a premium flight experience"

The United app is now even better

The United app is now even better

Introducing an all-in-one travel partner that provides a more dynamic experience — the United app now interacts with you as you move throughout your entire travel journey. With enhancements that provide intuitive assistance every step of the way, the app still includes features you know and love.

How we got here

Enlisting the help of over 500 participants during our research and discovery phase, the feedback we received helped to guide the design as well as app improvements. And during the beta test phase, we expanded testing to include real users (we invited more than 1,000 employees and customers) to ensure the updates would drive the intended value. With 3,500 bookings created and 22,000 reservations viewed, we made sure the updates to the app were functional and helped to improve a user's overall experience.

"As we continue to improve the customer experience, we are looking at our digital channels to create better experiences for our customers. We are reimagining the United app and giving our customers a more dynamic experience to make managing their travel seamless. The improved app includes several new useful enhancements while keeping the same features our customers know and love from the previous version of the United app," said Linda Jojo, Executive Vice President for Technology and Chief Digital Officer.

Dynamic experience

The United app will open to the most useful and relevant information throughout your journey.

For example, 24 hours before departure, the home screen on the United app will prompt you to check-in. Once checked in, an option to get your boarding pass will populate right on the home screen so you'll no longer need to access it via the boarding pass tab on the current version of the app.

Check in

Easily check in for your flight 24 hours before departure via the home screen once in flight, the app's home screen will update to display flight status and onboard entertainment options, making it even easier to find exactly what you're looking for.

In the event of a connection, you'll also find directions from your arrival gate to your connecting gate on the app. If you've reached your final destination, information on where to collect your baggage will be displayed via the baggage carousel number.

Quick access

Updates to the app also include a new streamlined navigation bar at the bottom of the home screen, giving you quick access to the most popular and helpful features. The navigation bar will also include a My Trips button that will house important information like boarding passes and flight details.

Additionally, you'll also find an inbox icon in the navigation bar that stores other useful and important information such as gate changes, flight status updates and boarding alerts.

Also featured in the app is a profile icon in the right corner at the top of the screen. Accessing this icon allows you to easily find your account information, and any associated United credit cards and club passes.

United Applies to Serve Tokyo Haneda from Six Leading U.S. Hubs

United Applies to Serve Tokyo Haneda from Six Leading U.S. Hubs

United Airlines announced today it has filed an application with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) for a total of six daily nonstop flights to Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD), Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and Guam's A.B. Won Pat International Airport (GUM). Pending completion of an aviation agreement between the U.S. and Japanese governments later this year, and slots awarded by DOT, the flights are expected to begin service by the summer of 2020.

United has presented a proposal maximized to meet consumer demand and benefit U.S. travelers. Together, the flights from five U.S. mainland hub cities and Guam will connect Tokyo Haneda with 112 U.S. airports, representing approximately two thirds of U.S.-Tokyo demand, or more than three million annual Tokyo bookings. With United's proposed routes representing five of the six largest metropolitan areas in the U.S. mainland and a combined population of nearly 56 million, the new flights requested in this proceeding will provide consumers with more choices and more convenient options when selecting Tokyo Haneda for their travel plans.

"If awarded by the DOT, these new nonstop flights would expand United's best-in-class Japan route network to better meet demand from U.S. consumers and businesses," said United Airlines President Scott Kirby. "Tokyo is a hub of 21st century global commerce and innovation and one of the world's most popular tourist destinations. Today's filing demonstrates United's unparalleled commitment to helping more Americans travel between our nation and Japan's capital city. Our proposed flights to Tokyo Haneda will offer an unrivaled experience and maximize choice and convenience for our customers traveling between the United States and Tokyo for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 and beyond."

United's proposed daily flights from Newark/New York, Los Angeles and Guam would supplement the airline's existing daily flights between those hubs and Tokyo's Narita International Airport (NRT), while United would shift existing daily nonstop Chicago, Washington D.C. and Houston flights from Tokyo Narita to Tokyo Haneda.

United's application will also support American businesses and help grow the U.S. economy by offering direct flights from key business, government and cultural hubs where demand for flights to Haneda, the closest airport to central Tokyo, is the highest. With these new flights in place, United would provide Haneda service from:

  • The largest market for travel demand between the U.S. mainland and Tokyo (Los Angeles);
  • The two largest markets for travel demand between the East Coast and Tokyo (Newark/New York and Washington, D.C.);
  • The two largest markets for travel demand between the central U.S. and Tokyo (Chicago and Houston); and
  • Guam, a market with significant travel demand from a Japanese tourist base that is critical to the island's tourism industry, economy and job market.

United's proposal would help realize the full potential of these new routes for U.S. consumers and businesses by expanding United's broad-based and end-to-end network between the United States and Japan. United's proposed flights to Haneda would allow U.S. consumers to make connections to 37 points in Japan via United's joint venture partner All Nippon Airways (ANA), strengthening United's existing comprehensive network when combined with nonstop or single-connection service from 112 U.S. airports.

United has proven its long-term commitment to Tokyo as a key gateway in Asia, serving Tokyo from 100 percent of its U.S. hubs. United also serves 31 markets in the Asia/Pacific region, more than any other U.S. carrier, and has successfully launched 11 new nonstop flights from the U.S. mainland to destinations throughout the Asia/Pacific region since 2014.

United's application is in response to the U.S. DOT instituting a competitive route proceeding to allocate slot pairs, with today's application filed under DOT proceeding # DOT-OST-2019-0014. For more information about United's bid, please visit UnitedToHaneda.com.
