Jet Airways direct flights daily Bengaluru-Singapore and Colombo

BENGALURU: Jet Airways today announced the launch of direct daily flights from Bengaluru to Singapore and to Colombo.

The airline will start its new service to Singapore effectively from December 14, further expanding its connectivity across the ASEAN region, the airline Vice President Commercial (India) Praveen Iyer told reporters here.

On choosing Bengaluru as the hub for international flight service in South India, Iyer said there has been a 15 per cent growth Year-on-Year in the number of passengers travelling between Bengaluru and Singapore, which is set to grow further in future.

Increasingly, there is also a growing number of leisure travellers choosing to fly on this sector, he said.

Moreover, Bengaluru has been established as a key IT destination, which is increasingly gaining prominence as a global investment destination, resulting in a significant growth in aviation traffic - both domestic and international - into and out of the garden city, Iyer stated.

"The startup capital of India with several Singapore based entities as key investors, also houses the headquarters of leading global corporates, accounting for significant traffic between Singapore and Bengaluru - with a substantial spillover to neighbouring towns and cities," he added.

Jet Airways already operates twice daily flights from Mumbai and Delhi and a single daily flight from Chennai to Singapore.

Starting January 5, Jet Airways will also launch its third international direct daily flight from Bengaluru to Colombo, providing travellers a convenient link between the Indian IT hub and Sri Lankan capital, Iyer said.

Bengaluru will be the second Indian city after Mumbai to be linked to Colombo and Jet Airways' third daily service to the Sri Lankan capital, expanding capacity by one-third on the route, he added.

Sri Lanka is fast emerging as a global IT-BPM destination of choice in a number of key areas, he said.

The airline will deploy a state-of-the-art Boeing 737-800 Next Generation (NG) aircraft on both these routes, Iyer said.

New high-speed Intercity train unveiled

New high-speed Intercity train unveiled

A new high-speed Intercity train developed at a County Durham factory has rolled off the production line.

Hitachi Rail Europe's Newton Aycliffe plant opened in 2015 after the company won a £5.7bn contract to supply express trains for the East Coast and Great Western main lines.

It will fit out 110 high-speed trains, which are manufactured in Japan.

Transport secretary Chris Grayling and the Japanese ambassador to the UK were among those present at the launch.

The trains are capable of running at 140mph, but will be limited to 125mph unless rail tracks are upgraded.

Karen Boswell, managing director of Hitachi Rail Europe, said: "Today is a celebration of the return of train manufacturing to the north east, supporting thousands of jobs and developing a strong engineering skills base in the region.

"Trains running across the country's rail network will be built by a proud workforce harnessing the best of Hitachi's long-standing rail expertise."

South African Airways debuts new business class

South African Airways debuts new business class

South African Airways' all-new business class seats have made their debut on the airline's new Airbus A330-300 jet – but they won't be fitted to the long-range A340 aircraft which fly between Perth and Johannesburg.

It's the first of five factory-fresh jets due from the Airbus hangar, with a second due by year's end and three more in early 2017, and marks the start of a long-awaited revitalisation for the Star Alliance member.

The new seats are based on the Vantage XL design by Thompson Aero Seating – an increasingly popular choice among airlines such as Qantas (the Vantage XL is the basis for the Qantas Airbus A330 and Boeing 787 business class), SASand Delta, while the simpler Vantage model is used by Malaysia Airlines and Swiss.

A staggered 1-2-1 layout provides privacy and direct-aisle access for every passenger, and the seats convert into a fully-flat bed.

The Airbus A330-300 is a larger, longer-range version of SAA's A330-200 fleet, with 46 seats in business class and 203 in economy.

However, a spokesman for South African Airways has confirmed to Australian Business Traveller that "the new (A330) seats won't be installed in other aircraft."

This means the long-range four-engine A340s which ply the 11 hour trek between Perth and Johannesburg will be staying with its lie-flat but 2-2-2 business class seats.

It also rules SAA's A330-200s – which currently sport angled seats – out of contention for an upgrade.

Kuwait Airways network increases to 37 destinations

Kuwait Airways network increases to 37 destinations

New routes demonstrate demand for expansion

KUWAIT: Kuwait Airways, the national carrier of the State of Kuwait, announced yesterday that two new routes have been added to its network of international destinations, with the Munich route having already started (30th of October) and Najaf, Iraq, to be added from 1st December 2016.

As part of the national carrier’s five-year transformation plan, Kuwait Airways recently announced that it had introduced a new “Winter Schedule”, which saw a revision to its departure and arrival timings across its network, increased frequencies on key routes, and is now seeing the addition of new destinations.

The addition of Munich has added to Kuwait Airways’ existing network into Germany, served through Frankfurt, and is now operating three flights per week to the Bavarian capital. Including Frankfurt, this brings the total number of flights to the EU’s most populous and largest economy to seven flights per week. Flights to Najaf, Iraq, will start from December 1 and offer a twice-weekly service, every Sunday and Thursday.

“While we have stated that some of the immediate priorities, within Kuwait Airways’ five-year transformation plan, are to consolidate and enhance our existing network; a profitable airline must always be in tune with the commercial demands of our passengers,” said Rasha Al-Roumi, Chairperson and CEO, of Kuwait Airways.

“The addition of these new routes are part of a growth strategy towards a profitable and sustainable business model, as well as contributing to positioning the national carrier as the preferred airline linking Kuwait to the world,” Roumi concluded.
